How Canadian phone numbers work
Canada is part of the North American Numbering Plan. Canadian phone numbers commonly have a three-digit area code followed by seven digits. The international country calling code is +1. Geographic area codes originally identify numbering regions, but number portability and modern phone systems mean the code does not necessarily indicate the present location of a person or business.
Common area codes in Canada
This is a selection of examples, not a complete list. Many places use several overlapping area codes, and numbering plans can change.
Choose an area code that fits your audience
If your customers are mainly in one region, a recognizable local code can make your contact details feel familiar. For a national brand, an easy-to-read or memorable sequence may matter more than a particular city. Think about where your customers are and what they expect from your service.
Check calling and carrier details
A number with a certain area code does not automatically guarantee local calling rates, an address in that city, or support from all telecommunications providers. Confirm any service-address requirements, call routing, portability, monthly charges and activation eligibility with the carrier you plan to use.
Search for availability carefully
Some appealing combinations may be unavailable or carry premium prices. A search result reflects a provider listing at a moment in time; always validate availability and terms before purchase or transfer.
